matt dodd’s fundraising

Matt arriving at Cape Wrath after walking for 35 days and having walked through some spectacular scenery which can only be appreciated by those who arrive on foot. He travelled back the next day to tackle the  Glasgow ½ marathon which all added up to 500 miles!!  Well done Matt!

31st July 2008  saw the start of another epic journey for Ayrshire man and Alan Campbell Group associate, Matthew Dodds – walking 500 miles through Scotland from the southeast corner to Cape Wrath in the far north west. Previously, Matt has walked to Everest base camp and also climbed to the summit of Mera Peak 21,047ft / 6,476m in the Himalayas. This time he raised funds for two other excellent good causes in addition to helambu project, namely: Maggies Centres a UK wide cancer support charity – and Youth Development at Kilmarnock Football Club.

31st July saw him start the walk from Lindisfarne. This is also the beginning of the east to west St Cuthberts Way (SCW) long distance path. Matt will followed the SCW before turning north towards the Central belt of Scotland, arriving at Broxburn on day eight. The Forth and Clyde canal kept him company until Maryhill in Glasgow. A short hop through the city and then it was onto the West Highland Way, a 95 mile walking route to Fort William.

En route, Matt took the opportunity of climbing the most southerly Munro in Scotland, Ben Lomond 3,195ft and tackle Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis 4,409ft when he reached Fort William. He continued to head north via the Great Glen Way and then pass through some of the most remote area’s of the UK. He also spent quite a few nights camping as he was far away from any hotels, hostels or B&Bs.

Matt arrived at Cape Wrath after walking for thirty five days on Thursday 4th September and  having walked through some spectacular scenery including Sandwood Bay which can only be appreciated by those who arrive on foot as no roads lead to it.

He travelled back on the final Saturday to Galston for a short rest before he tackled Glasgow ½ marathon on Sunday 7th September. This all added up to 500 miles!!  Well done Matt!

Matt raised £12,000 in total, with £4000 being donated to helambu project.

Matt Dodds is an Ayrshire Businessman who first traveled to Nepal in 2007 to trek to Everest Base Camp. He became involved with the Helambu Project at the very beginning after making contact with Mike Steven following reading an article about his experiences in Helambu in the Daily Record. SInce then Matt and his wife Jeanette have worked hard to raise money with the support of their local community.

The photography night was a great success and managed to raise £850
