artwork project

She launched the first mass painting night on June 4th 2008 at the Glen O'Dee. After a few nibbles and plenty of laughter, the staff and their friends managed to get started on their 'Helambu Picasso', with the remaining squares sold off very profitably and painted over the next few weeks. Due to extra demand a further separate painting was created by Agnes and her friends from the local art class. The pictures were finally assembled and framed in early August and then sold for over £450. When taking into account the money raised through selling the tiles, the artwork project has raised over £1200 to date.

Local artist Lorraine Walker has also raised £500 through the sale of her pictures at local exhibitions.

Mounted A3 prints are available for sale for £15 - contact info@helambuproject.org for further information if you're interested!

Agnes McKenzie, a nurse at the Glen O'Dee Community Hospital in Banchory and a keen artist in her spare time, worked with the local art group to raise funds by auctioning original artwork and through creating a 'picture raffle'. The latter involves dividing a painting or picture into a large grid and then selling off each square for a donation of £5 upwards. The buyer is also provided with a much larger ceramic 'tile' which then allows them to copy the original artwork from the grid onto their tile. The individual painted tiles are then all handed back to Agnes, following which she re-assembles them to form a large, new interpretation of the original - made up of mini-masterpieces!

thangka sale

Mike Steven was gifted several Thangkas  from Dorjee. These are original, colourful Buddhist paintings hand-crafted on cotton canvas in a variety of sizes with each depicting different aspects of Buddhist life. They are quite stunning and extremely detailed and intricate, particularly those with gold-leaf paints. Our local Art Gallery has kindly framed and mounted six of these which are currently for sale from between £200 to £300. To date Banchory Art Gallery has help raise £606 for helambu.org.

A large selection of thangkas for sale can be found at our sister VEC website, VEC’s Thangka Campaign
